The Friendly Giant How-To
Download a File

Downloading Files with Netscape:

To download files with Netscape simply left-click on the file you want to download...depending on which version of Netscape you have installed, you will be either asked where you want to save the file or what to do with the file.

  1. If you are asked where you want to save the file, select a directory to store your Internet files.  A directory called 'Downloads' might be a good idea.   Then click 'Save'.  You can minimise this window and continue surfing with your browser if you desire.
  2. If you are presented with a window with a selection of buttons at the bottom with labels such as 'Save as..' or 'Pick App'...click on 'Save as..' and follow the above procedure choosing a directory.

Downloading Files with Internet Explorer:

To download files with Internet Explorer 3.x, left-click on the file you wish to download, select the directory to save into  ie. 'Downloads' then click 'Save'. To download with Internet Explorer 4.0, you will be asked if you want to 'Run this program' or 'Save this program', select 'Save This Program' and select where you want to save to.

Installing Files:

Depending on the file you download, but most files are simple double click and follow the instructions.  If the program is zipped you will need a program such as Winzip (which should be installed) to unzip the files.  If you have winzip installed a window will come up with several buttons at the top with labels such as 'New' 'Open' and 'Extract' or 'Install'.  If there is an 'Install' option, click that.   If you have an 'Extract' option, click that.  This is where things get a little tricky.  You must choose a directory to unzip the file to...choose something that is empty such as 'Temp'...you will need to keep a track of where you unzip it as you will need to know where the files are to install the program.  Once Winzip has unzipped the files, go to that directory and run the setup program as normal.
