The Friendly Giant How-To
Send an Email

What you need:

  •  An Internet connection.
  •  An Email Program.
  •  The recipient's email address, i.e. support@giant.net.au
  •  Something to say.
  •  A realisation the email isn't so hard to play with.

The exact procedure varies slightly between email programs, but these guidelines should be enough.

General Procedure for sending Email.

  1. Open your email program. Common programs are Eudora, Internet Mail, Microsoft Outlook, Pegasus Mail and Netscape Mail.
  2. Open a new message window. The new message window will in the case of most programs be accessible through one of the menus at the top of the screen. The "file" menu and the "message" menu are two likely candidates. Alternatively there may be a button towards the top of the screen which will automatically open a new message. Most programs now have a feature which will show a brief explanation of a buttons function when the mouse pointer is held over it for a second or two.
  3. In the "To: " field, enter the email address of the intended recipient
  4. If you wish the mail to reach more than one recipient, put their email addresses in the "cc:" field.
  5. In the subject field, enter a brief description of what the mail is about, i.e."great explanation of sending mail!"
  6. In the message body, you write whatever it is you have to say to the mail recipient.
  7. Press the "Send" button. (Note: in some programs you are asked to "queue" the mail first for later transmission, if this is the case, then first queue the mail and then press the "send and receive" button which will check for any new messages and send any queued messages in one go.)
  8. You should now have sent your mail.
  9. It is worth remembering that if you want to practice any mailing techniques, then you can address the mail to yourself.

Receiving Email.

When you wish to check your email, use the "check mail" feature of your mail program. As in finding the new message button, it is most likely hidden in a menu (File or Edit) or on a button.

(Note: The first time you check your mail it is possible that you will need to know your mail password.)

Where to now?

Nearly all email programs have far more features than the ones that have been outlined here. Most allow a file to be sent with an email (i.e. attaching a word document, a picture or a sound file). Have a look in the help file of your program under the topic of attaching files. The help file is most commonly found under the help menu which is often the right-most menu.
