Do you remember the old Catholic devotions: First Fridays, Novenas, Devotion to (pictures) of the Sacred Heart, the Holy Name Society, Womens Sacred Heart Sodality, Children of Mary?
Most of these devotions have past their use-by date yet the human psyche yearns for something like spiritual devotions with their emotional fervour.
Managed well, good devotions can be very healthy and beneficial for our spiritual development.
We might be devoted to the scriptures: honouring the bible and reading part of it every day using the daily lectionary readings is a good idea. If you are on the Net it is fairly easy to find some good daily guidance for the lectionary readings.
We might make a special effort to prepare for our reception of the Sunday proclamation of the Word of God. This could be a good home/family devotion.
Some may incorporate a form of prayer into a daily exercise routine.
A personal devotion or spiritual practice that more and more people are finding satisfying is meditation. A form of stillness meditation is very easy: the difficult part is the self discipline to do it regularly 20 minutes in the morning and evening is recommended as an ideal commitment, but even two minutes regularly each day in stillness meditation is much better than none at all.
